The park is nearly 400 acres in size and includes a mix of woodland, pasture, hay meadow and marsh. There are a number of great trails suitable for cyclists and walkers. There is also the 13th century Hadleigh castle ruins where there are fabulous views of the surrounding Essex countryside and the River Thames.<br/>The <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/saffron-trail-walking-route'>Saffron Trail</a> passes through the park so you can pick this up to extend your walk. The route then heads north towards Fareham and then onto <a href='http://www.royalarmouries.org/visit-us/fort-nelson' target='_blank'>Fort Nelson</a>, one of five defensive forts built on the summit of Portsdown Hill in the 1860s. From here you continue to the town of Bishop's Waltham with its moated <a href='http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/properties/bishops-waltham-palace/' target='_blank'>Bishop's Palace</a> ruin built in 1135.<br/>
The final section of the walk takes you through the beautiful Itchen Valley and along the River Itchen to Winchester where the walk finishes near the splendid cathedral.

The mere is surrounded by mature woodland with two very attractive hay meadows. The park attracts a variety of wildfowl including snipe, curlew and pochard. The <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkscycle/llangollen-canal-walking-and-cycle-route'>Llangollen Canal</a> also runs through Colmere and there are several other nearby meres including Blake Mere, White Mere and Newton Mere. As such, there is plenty of scope for continuing your walk if you have time.<br/>
The park is located a couple of miles east of Ellesmere. If you'd like to continue your walk you could head to the nearby <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/ellesmere-country-park-walking-route'>Ellesmere Country Park</a> where there are lakeside and woodland footpaths to enjoy.

The path is easy to follow as it is waymarked by metal and plastic disks attached to wooden and metal posts.<br/>
Highlights on the route in include the <a href='http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-hintonampnergarden' target='_blank'>National Trust</a> owned <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/hinton-ampner-walking-route'>Hinton Ampner</a> stately home with its wonderful gardens and <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/watership-down-walking-route'>Watership Down</a> - the delightful setting for Richard Adams' 1972 novel. <br/>The route passes the wonderful 5000 acre estate surrounding <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/highclere-castle-walking-route'>Highclere Castle</a> in Hampshire. The house is famous as the location of period drama 'Downton Abbey'. There are also some lovely waterside stretches to enjoy at Cheriton along the River Itchen and along the River Arle at New Arlesford. The walk finishes at <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/walbury-hill-walking-route'>Walbury Hill</a>, the highest point in Berkshire and the South East of England.<br/>

It's a lovely walk taking you first along the River Darwen and through Hoghton Bottoms towards Belmont with its attractive reservoir. At Jumbles Reservoir in <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/jumbles-country-park-walking-route'>Jumbles Country Park</a> you will turn north passing along Wayoh Reservoir before climbing <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/routeslinkswalks/darwen-tower-walking-route'>Darwen Hill</a> where you will find Jubilee Tower. You can climb the 85 ft high tower for some splendid views of North Yorkshire, Morecambe Bay, Blackpool Tower, Cumbria, and the Isle of Man. This section also passes the pretty <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/RoutesLinksWalks/roddlesworth-reservoir-walking-route'>Roddlesworth Reservoir</a> and Rake Brook Reservoir which are surrounded by nice woodland trails. The route finishes passing the town of Darwen and then descending into <a href='http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/RoutesLinksCycle/witton-country-park-walking-and-cycle-route'>Witton Country Park</a>.
