Balcary Bay Walk

3.4 miles (5.4 km)

This circular walk explores Balcary Bay at the southern end of Auchencairn Bay, overlooking Hestan Island on the Solway Firth.
The route follows a fine coastal path with wonderful sea views, rugged cliffs, and chances to spot seabirds and other wildlife along the shoreline.... Inland sections pass through fields and farmland, offering a peaceful contrast to the dramatic coast. There are great views out to Hestan Island from Balcary Point. At certain conditions of low tide the island is accessible on foot as there is a natural causeway of shingle and mussels from Almorness Point to the northern tip of Hestan.
On clear days, the views stretch across to the Cumbrian hills and the wider Solway coast, making this a particularly scenic and varied walk.
After your walk you could enjoy rest and refreshments at the Balcary Bay Hotel. The hotel has a nice outdoor seating area overlooking the bay.
To extend the walk pick up the Rascarrel Bay Walk at the western end of the bay.
You could also continue your walking in the area on the Rockcliffe to Kippford Walk.
