Crychan Forest Walk

2.3 miles (3.7 km)

This expansive forest is located on the Carmarthenshire/Powys border. It includes miles of waymarked walking trails, cycling trails and mountain bike trails.
The forest is set in countryside between the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and the Cambrian Mountains.... A network of old tracks runs through the forest, following routes that once linked scattered farms before the area was planted with trees in the 20th century.
During the 1930s the Forestry Commission bought the farms and surrounding land and established the forest as part of wider efforts to rebuild timber supplies after the First World War. As you walk, you may come across ruined dwellings that remain from this earlier period, adding a quiet historical element to the route.
The forest is made up of a mix of oak, ash, beech, hazel and conifers, giving the walk a changing character through the year. Spring brings bluebells along some of the tracks, while autumn colours dominate later in the season. The forest is also home to wildlife, with goshawks, buzzards and red kites known to nest here, and occasional sightings of roe deer adding interest to the walk.
You can continue your walking in the area by picking up the Cynghordy Viaduct Walk to the north.
