This circular walk explores Knockmany Forest near the village of Augher in County Tyrone, visiting the prehistoric burial monument correctly known as Anya’s Tomb.
The route follows waymarked forest tracks through mixed conifer and broadleaf woodland before climbing steadily towards Knockmany Hill. As the ascent continues, the trees begin to thin and views open out across the surrounding countryside, with wide panoramas over south Tyrone and into neighbouring counties in clear conditions.... The paths are generally good, though they can become soft or muddy after prolonged rain.
At the summit you reach Anya’s Tomb, a large Neolithic chambered cairn dating to around 3000 BC. The monument occupies a prominent hilltop position and is closely linked to local folklore. According to legend, Anya was a powerful giantess who chose this high point as her burial place so she could continue to overlook the land. The elevated setting provides extensive views across rolling farmland, low hills and distant uplands, making this the highlight of the walk.
After visiting the tomb, the route continues around the upper slopes before descending back into the forest. Knockmany Forest is rich in wildlife, with red squirrels known to inhabit the area, along with jays, buzzards and woodpeckers. The woodland floor supports bluebells, ferns, mosses and seasonal wildflowers, adding interest throughout the year.
This walk offers a rewarding mix of woodland scenery, open hilltop views and an important archaeological site, making it a popular short route for walkers interested in both landscape and local history in this part of County Tyrone.
