Loch Cluanie and Ciste Dhubh Walk
7.6 miles (12.3 km)This walk climbs to Ciste Dhubh for some fine views over Loch Cluanie in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland.
You can start the walk from the roadside parking area on the northern side of the lake. From here you can pick up a steadily rising path heading north west up to Am Bàthach and then the 979 metre high summit of Ciste Dhubh.
Loch Cluanie lies within Glen Shiel, surrounded by some of the finest mountain scenery in the Highlands.... The loch itself is a large reservoir, with steep hillsides rising dramatically from its shores and heather-covered slopes stretching into the distance. As you ascend, there are excellent views across the length of the loch towards the peaks of the South Glen Shiel Ridge, while the rugged summits of the Kintail range dominate the skyline to the west. The area is also home to red deer, golden eagles, and mountain hares, which are sometimes seen in the higher ground. The return from Ciste Dhubh offers sweeping views back towards the loch and the quiet glen below, making it a rewarding route in this remote and scenic part of the Highlands.
