This circular walk visits Morton Castle near Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway.
The route explores a peaceful area of countryside surrounded by gentle hills, woodland and open farmland. From the car park it is a short walk to the castle, which stands on a small promontory overlooking a secluded loch.... The ruins of Morton Castle, dating from the 15th century, are set in a striking position with fine views across the water and surrounding hills.
After exploring the site, the walk continues into the adjacent Morton Wood, an area rich in wildlife, with chances to see red squirrels, deer and various bird species.
You can continue your historical walking in the area by heading a few miles west to visit Drumlanrig Castle.
