Turnhouse Hill Walk
4.5 miles (7.3 km)This walk begins from the car park and visitor centre to the east of Turnhouse Hill, where clear paths lead west across open ground towards the lower slopes. The ascent is steady but soon rewards you with wide views over the Pentland Hills, with the ridgeline opening out as you gain height.
The summit of Turnhouse Hill offers a broad panorama towards Glencorse and the neighbouring peaks, giving a strong sense of the upland landscape that surrounds the area.
From the top the route descends northwards on a well-trodden grassy path, dropping towards the shallow valley of the Logan Burn.... This section feels more sheltered, with the burn threading through a mix of heath, rushes and patches of wet ground where birds such as meadow pipits and wagtails are often seen. The sound of running water accompanies the walk as the path follows the burn for a short distance.
You then turn east on a clear track that leads towards Glencorse Reservoir. The scenery gradually softens as you approach the water, with wooded edges and open shoreline creating a contrast to the hilltop terrain. The reservoir itself is a calm and attractive setting, fringed by pines and home to ducks, geese and occasional herons. The return to the car park follows good paths along the northern side of the reservoir, completing a varied circuit that combines a hill climb, a quiet valley and peaceful waterside walking.
