Waterville and Lough Currane Loop Walk

26.8 miles (43.2 km)

This circular walk explores the area around the Kerry village of Waterville. You'll pass along the coast at Ballinskelligs Bay before heading around the expansive Lough Currane.
Ballinskelligs Bay is a wide, open sweep of Atlantic coastline backed by low hills and sandy beaches, with clear views across the water towards the Skellig Michael and Little Skellig on clear days.... The shoreline here is shaped by exposed conditions, with rocky headlands alternating with long stretches of sand, and the area has a strong maritime character rooted in fishing and coastal settlement. Offshore islands and reefs support seabirds, while the coastal waters are known for their clarity and changing colour depending on light and weather.
Lough Currane lies immediately inland from Waterville and is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the south-west of Ireland. It is a limestone lake with shallow margins and reed-fringed edges, supporting a range of aquatic plants and birdlife. The lough is well known for its trout and salmon fisheries and forms a calm contrast to the exposed coast nearby. Waterville itself sits between the lake and the sea, giving the walk a varied sense of place that combines coastal scenery, inland water and a settled rural landscape closely associated with the Ring of Kerry.
