Wee Binnian Walk
2.4 miles (3.8 km)This walk climbs to Wee Binnian in the Mourne Mountains.
As you climb there are excellent views down to the Silent Valley Reservoir below and across to the neigbouring peak of Slieve Binnian.
Starting from the road south of the hill the path heads steadily uphill over stony terrain, gaining height quickly as the slopes narrow around the northern side of the main mountain. As you climb, the bulk of Slieve Binnian dominates the skyline, while to the east the land falls away towards the coastline beyond Annalong and the Irish Sea.... The route is straightforward but feels remote, with only the sound of wind on the rocks and the cry of upland birds breaking the quiet.
The small summit of Wee Binnian is reached by a final pull over granite slabs, opening up a surprisingly extensive panorama. From the top you can see across the wide stretch of the Silent Valley reservoir, towards Slieve Lamagan, Ben Crom and the central Mournes, with the higher peaks forming a striking horseshoe around the deep valleys. To the south, the full ridge of Binnian towers above, showing its tors and crags in profile.
