Whitelee Wind Farm Walk and Cycle

8.3 miles (13.4 km)

This circular walk or cycle explores the Whitelee Wind Farm near Kilmarnock and Glasgow.
You can start off from the visitor centre which includes a car park and a wealth of information about the site. Surfaced paths then take you around Lochgoin Reservoir with excellent views over the surrounding hills and countryside....
From the visitor centre the route heads out onto the network of well-maintained access tracks that run between the turbines, giving an impressive close-up view of the wind farm in operation. The open moorland setting provides far-reaching views across East Ayrshire, and on clearer days the landscape stretches towards the Campsie Fells and the southern edge of the Highlands. As you approach Lochgoin Reservoir the path becomes quieter, with the water surrounded by rough grassland, heath and low moor, creating good habitat for birds such as meadow pipits and skylarks.
The circuit around the reservoir offers a mix of exposed stretches and more sheltered sections near the water’s edge. Interpretation boards along the way give background information on the wind farm, local wildlife and the history of the moor. The return to the visitor centre follows broad tracks with gentle gradients, making the route suitable for both walkers and cyclists looking for an accessible outing through open countryside and Scotland’s largest onshore wind farm.
