GPS Cycle and Walking Routes

Shugborough Hall Walks

4 miles (6.5 km)

This circular walk uses public footpaths and the Staffordshire Way to take you around Shugborough Park in Great Haywood. You also have the option of exploring the 900 acre Shugborough Estate with its mansion house and delightful gardens. This does require and entry fee though.
The walk starts from the car park at Milford, passing Milford Common and heading to Shugborough Hall. You return with a lovely waterside section along the River Sow.
The Trent and Mersey Canal passes along the northern edge of the park so there is scope for continuing your walk through the beautiful Trent Valley along this waterway. You are also right on the edge of the Cannock Chase AONB so you could extend your outing by exploring miles of woodland trails. The Two Saints Way runs right through the area to Lichfield so this is a good way of extending your walk.

Pubs/Cafes

The Barley Mow pub is located right next to Milford Common. It's ideally situated for some post walk refreshments. There's a good menu and an outdoor seating area for warmer days. You can find it at 28 Main Road with a postcode of ST17 0UW for your sat navs. There's also the Park Farm cafe on the estate which sells a good range of meals and snacks.

Dog Walking

The parkland and woodland trails on the estate are ideal for dog walking so you'll probably see other owners on your visit. You are asked to please keep them on leads because of the livestock. The on site cafe mentioned above is also dog friendly.

Further Information and Other Local Ideas

The Abbots Bromley Walk visits the park from the attractive village. It passes the expansive Blithfield Reservoir before heading along the canal to the park.
Follow the canal north and you will come to the village of Sandon where you can explore the old Sandon Hall estate. There's nice views of the Trent Valley from the public footpaths surrounding the expansive hall estate which is occasionally open to the public.
For more walking ideas in the area see the Staffordshire Walks page.

Essex Bridge, Shugborough - geograph.org.uk - 60560

Essex Bridge. When viewed from the river, this bridge looks just like any other old bridge, but it's much more fun than your average old bridge! This is a packhorse bridge, built to link the Shugborough estate to the village of Great Haywood. And if you search on the Web for information and photos of it, you'll be in for another surprise: it used to be over twice as long. By the way, it crosses the Trent just below the point where that river meets the River Sow.
