Yelverton. Yelverton is a "crossroads village" situated at the northern edge of Roborough Down. This photograph shows what most people passing through would recognise, the roundabout, wide green, a large hotel and the road to Princetown. There are now many houses hidden away behind the east and west side of the green making Yelverton into quite a substantial village.

Yelverton Shops - geograph.org.uk - 89857

Yelverton Shops. These single storey buildings look quite curious. In fact they used to be taller but when the nearby RAF airfield was built in 1942 these buildings had their upper stories removed to stop them getting in the way of aircraft landing or taking off.

Leg O' Mutton Corner - geograph.org.uk - 763177

Leg O' Mutton Corner. This is a strange place, it looks like a village centre having shops and a large public house/hotel but it is in an isolated position separated from the body of Yelverton by the main road to Tavistock and facing the open heathland of Roborough Down (behind the photographer). History probably has a lot to do with it. Construction of the airfield for RAF Harrowbeer in WWII forced the main road to be moved away from this corner. Nowadays the area probably survives on the fact that it is easy to park a car here.

Drinking Trough on Roborough Down. Roborough Down is a popular place for horse riding and I presume that horses are the reason this was constructed.
