Craiglockhart Hill Walk

2.5 miles (4 km)

This circular walk climbs to the Wester and Easter Craiglockhart Hills on the south western side of Edinburgh.
The route uses established footpaths to visit both summits, passing through areas of mixed woodland and open grassland. A small loch lies at the foot of the hills and provides a pleasant spot to pause before beginning the ascent.
From the tops there are wide views across the city skyline, including Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle, with the Pentland Hills rising to the south.... The hills form part of a local nature reserve, and the varied habitat supports a good range of birdlife and seasonal wildflowers. After taking in the viewpoints the path loops back towards the start through quiet green space, making this a rewarding short hill circuit within easy reach of the city centre.
To continue your hill walking in the city head to the nearby Blackford Hill and the famous Arthur's Seat.

Easter Craiglockhart Hill
Easter Craiglockhart Hill. Looking from the summit of the hill towards Napier University's Craiglockhart Campus. The oldest part of the Campus was built in 1877 as the Craiglockhart Hydropathic Institution. During World War One it was requisitioned by the army as a war hospital and it was in this building that in 1917 War Poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen met. Sadly Owen did not survive the War but Sassoon at the Wars end published both his own and Owens War Poems. The monstrous modern extension caused quite a bit of consternation when it was being planned and constructed.
