Dalhousie Castle Walk

2.5 miles (4 km)

This circular walk explores the lovely grounds of Dalhousie Castle in Cockpen, Midlothian. The castle estate includes some pleasant woodland walking trails and riverside paths along the River South Esk.
The route passes through a mix of mature beech and oak woodland, where red squirrels and woodland birds are often seen among the trees.... The path follows the banks of the South Esk, offering peaceful views of the river as it winds through the estate. In spring, the woods are carpeted with bluebells, while in autumn the foliage provides a fine display of colour.
The trail also gives views of the impressive 13th-century Dalhousie Castle, now a hotel, with its turrets rising above the trees. There are opportunities to extend the walk towards nearby fields and estate parkland, where roe deer can sometimes be spotted at dawn or dusk. The route finishes by returning along quiet tracks through the castle grounds, with the sound of the river and birdsong accompanying much of the way.
You can continue your walking by heading north towards Bonnyrigg and picking up the Penicuik to Dalkeith Railway Walk.
