Salmon Leaps and Caerau Hillfort Walk

7.5 miles (12 km)

This walk visits the Salmon Leaps and the ancient Caerau Hillfort in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The walk starts in Dinas Powys, heading north along the Cadoxton River towards the village of Michaelston-le-pit. Near here you can see the Salmon Leaps on the Wrinstone Brook (also part of the Cadoxton River network).... The Leaps are located in a beautiful glacial valley with surrounding woodlands (like Cwm George and Casehill Woods) and fields. The best time to see actual salmon leaping upstream is during the late summer and autumn, particularly after heavy rain, when they migrate to spawn.
The walk then continues north to visit Caerau Hill Fort. The large, triangular Iron Age fort is a protected national monument located on the western edge of Cardiff, between the suburbs of Caerau and Ely. It sits on a high ridge and is enclosed by massive defensive banks and ditches, though much of this is now hidden by trees and farmland. The fort has a history spanning over 6,000 years, with evidence of earlier Neolithic occupation.
