Hafna Mine Walk

2.5 miles (4 km)

This circular walk visits the Hafna Mine and the pretty Llyn Glangors near Llanrwst in the Gwydyr Forest.
Hafna Mine lies within Gwydyr Forest and is among the best-preserved old lead mining sites in the region.... Its remains include a stepped mill, incline, smelting house and a round-plan chimney, and the site was last used commercially in around 1919. The mine’s processing mill dates from 1889–1905 and incorporated water, steam and electrical power in successive phases.
The forest itself still bears visible scars from its mining past: rare metallophyte plants grow on the spoil heaps, and the former workings form part of a designated area protecting the unusual ecology left by the metal-rich waste. As you follow the walk you’ll pass the mine remains, capped shafts and interpretive panels that emphasise the contrast between industrial heritage and the woodland scenery of Gwydyr Forest.
Llyn Glangors sits nearby as an upland lake formed or enlarged to serve the mining industry and now provides a restful natural feature. There are some stunning views over the clear lake to Snowdonia mountains such as Moel Siabod, Tryfan and the Glyders. Together the mine and lake add layers of historical interest and quiet beauty to this accessible forest circuit.
Both Llyn Parc and Llyn Geirionydd are very close by, so it's easy to continue your lakeside walking.
