Killeter Forest Walk

6 miles (9.7 km)

This circular walk follows the Bannadoo Trail in Killeter Forest in County Tyrone, near Castlederg.
The waymarked route takes you through a quiet upland forest landscape of conifers and mixed woodland, making it a peaceful walk well away from roads and settlements.
The trail uses a network of well-surfaced forest tracks and narrower woodland paths, with gentle gradients that make it suitable for a steady, relaxed walk. As you move deeper into the forest there are occasional clearings that open up views across the surrounding hills on the Tyrone–Donegal border, giving a real sense of the remoteness of this part of the Sperrins foothills.
Killeter Forest is managed by Coillte and supports a variety of wildlife.... Red squirrels are present in the wider area, while birds such as siskin, crossbill and coal tit are often seen or heard in the trees. The forest floor can be colourful in late summer and autumn, with fungi appearing along the trails and verges after wet weather.
The Banadoo Trail is well suited to year-round walking, though conditions can be muddy after heavy rain. Overall, it’s a pleasant circular walk that combines easy forest walking with a quiet rural setting, ideal for anyone looking to explore a lesser-known corner of County Tyrone.
You can continue your walking by picking up the nearby Lough Derg Pilgrim Path.
