Lough Derg Pilgrim Path Walk Pettigo

7.1 miles (11.4 km)

The Lough Derg Pilgrim Path is a scenic lakeside walk in County Donegal, following part of the route traditionally used by pilgrims travelling to St Patrick’s Purgatory on Station Island. The trail runs through quiet, remote countryside and offers a gentler alternative to the more demanding island pilgrimage, while still retaining a strong sense of place and history....
The path skirts the southern and western side of Lough Derg, with frequent views across the water towards Station Island and the surrounding hills of south Donegal. It passes through a mix of open moorland, rough pasture and woodland, creating a peaceful setting that feels far removed from busy roads and settlements. The lakeside sections are particularly atmospheric, especially in calm weather when the water reflects the surrounding landscape.
Along the route you’ll encounter a number of features linked to the long tradition of pilgrimage in the area, including simple stations of prayer, holy wells and stone markers. Information panels help explain the spiritual and cultural significance of Lough Derg, which has been a place of pilgrimage for more than a thousand years and remains one of Ireland’s most important religious sites.
The varied habitats around the lake support a range of wildlife, with swans, ducks and other waterfowl commonly seen on the water, while curlew, lapwing and skylark are often heard over the surrounding fields and bogland. The quiet nature of the route also makes it a good place to spot hares and other small mammals, particularly in the early morning or evening.
You can continue your walking by picking up the Killeter Forest Walk.
