Llyn Cwm Bychan Roman Steps and Pistyll Gwyn Walk
4.3 miles (7 km)This walk takes you from Llyn Cwm Bychan to the Pistyll Gwyn Waterfalls via the Roman Steps.
You can start the walk from the car park at the eastern end of Llyn Cwm Bychan. From here you head south east to the Roman Steps, which form a long, stepped ascent through a rocky pass.... Despite the name, the route is thought to date from the medieval period, though it may follow an even older track. The climb is steady and rewards you with wide views over the surrounding hills and the rugged landscape that characterises this part of Eryri. The path is stony in places but easy to follow, with clear views ahead as it rises towards the high ground.
Beyond the top of the Steps, the route continues south east across open moorland before descending towards Pistyll Gwyn. The waterfalls sit in a secluded valley and are reached by a series of narrow paths that drop gradually alongside streams and rocky outcrops. The falls themselves cascade over a steep rock face into a wooded gorge, providing a scenic end point before you retrace your steps or return by your preferred route.
You can continue your walking by climbing Rhinog Fawr or visiting the Nantcol Waterfalls.
