Sliabh An Iarainn (Iron Mountain) Walk

3 miles (4.9 km)

This walk climbs to Sliabh An Iarainn in County Leitrim. You can start the walk from the parking area just to the south east of the mountain. From here you follow trails north west to climb to the 585 metres (1,919 ft) summit.
Sliabh An Iarainn translates as the "Iron Mountain", a name that reflects the area’s long association with iron ore mining, particularly on the eastern slopes where traces of old workings can still be found.... The mountain is formed largely of sandstone and shale, with extensive areas of blanket bog and rough moorland giving it a wild, open character typical of the north-west of Ireland.
As height is gained, views steadily open out across Lough Allen to the west, with the Dartry Mountains, including Benbulben and Slieve League on very clear days, forming a dramatic skyline beyond. To the east and south there are wide-ranging views over the hills and drumlin-studded lowlands of Leitrim, with the Shannon basin stretching away in the distance.
The summit area is broad and gently domed rather than sharply peaked, marked by rocky outcrops and wetter ground underfoot. From the top there are extensive panoramic views in all directions, making it a rewarding climb despite the relatively modest height. In clear conditions the sense of space and isolation is striking, with very little sign of habitation below.
Wildlife on the mountain includes red grouse and meadow pipits on the open slopes, while skylarks are often heard during the spring and summer months. The boggy ground also supports insect life such as dragonflies in warmer weather. This is a walk best attempted in good visibility, as the upper slopes can be featureless in mist, but in clear conditions it offers one of the finest viewpoints in County Leitrim.
