Barry Island Walk
2.6 miles (4.2 km)This walk explores the seaside resort of Barry Island in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Starting from the car park near the Fun Park the route heads west to pick up a coastal stretch along Barry Harbour with views over Little Island Bay. You continue south to Friar's Point before turning east to pass along the sandy beach at Whitmore Bay.... Around here you'll also pass the pretty Promenade Gardens where there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view over the Bristol Channel.
The coastal path gives a good sense of the island’s varied shoreline, from rocky coves and tidal flats to the broad sweep of Whitmore Bay. In calmer conditions you may spot gulls, oystercatchers and cormorants feeding along the water’s edge, while the bay itself is often busy with swimmers and paddleboarders in summer. The path also offers fine views across the channel towards the Somerset coast, especially on clear days.
The route then heads to Nell's Point before returning along Whitmore Bay to the car park. This section includes one of the best viewpoints on the island, with a raised grassy headland overlooking the beach and the open water beyond. It provides a fitting end to a short but varied coastal circuit taking in many of Barry Island’s most scenic spots.
You can continue your walking around Barry Island by heading west to visit Porthkerry Country Park and Rhoose Point - the most southerly point of mainland Wales.
