Cwmtillery Lakes Circular Walk
3.7 miles (6 km)This circular walk explores the lakes and countryside around Cwmtillery in Monmouthshire.
The walk begins at the car parking area on the eastern side of the lakes. The lakes are a well-known local landmark originally created during the area’s mining era.... Today it is a peaceful spot with clear water, tree cover around the shoreline and views towards the higher ground above the valley. A well-maintained path circles the lake, giving an easy start before the route climbs onto the surrounding hills.
From the lake you follow paths that rise gradually through woodland and onto more open ground, where the broader landscape of the Abertillery valley comes into view. These upper tracks provide a good sense of the area’s industrial past, with old workings and remnants of former routes still visible in places. The walk continues along quiet trails across the hillside, offering contrasting views down to the water and across the ridges that frame the valley.
