The view from Graiguenamanagh bridge. Starting in the historic town of Graiguenamanagh, the walk begins at the bridge on the Carlow side, where you turn left onto the towpath. You leave behind the sight of Duiske Abbey and traditional barges moored at the granite quays to enter a steeply wooded valley along the River Barrow. The path, marked with yellow arrows on a black background, leads you northwards through a sylvan landscape dominated by the views of Brandon Hill. As you progress, you will reach the peaceful Ballykeenan Lock, followed by the scenic Clashganny Lock and weir, which is a popular beauty spot and an ideal place for a brief rest
View down the main street, Borris, Co. Carlow. Continuing past Clashganny, the trail remains largely flat on a grassy surface that occasionally becomes mucky in wet weather. You will pass landmarks such as the ruins of Clohastia Castle and Ballinagrane Lock, while keeping an eye out for local wildlife like herons, kingfishers, and otters. After approximately 13 kilometres of walking, you will reach Ballytiglea Bridge, where you turn right uphill to leave the riverbank. A final stretch along the road leads you into the Georgian village of Borris, home to the historic Borris House and the impressive sixteen-arch Borris Viaduct.
