Nephin Mountain Walk

4.8 miles (7.8 km)

This walk ascends Nephin Mountain in County Mayo, starting from a minor road on the northern edge of the woodland, just west of Lahardane.
The route begins on a forest track before leaving the trees behind, where the landscape opens out into open moorland.... From here the climb becomes steadily steeper, following the ridge along the western side of the corrie through heather-covered ground.
Parts of the route are marked with green fingerposts, but these become less frequent as the walk progresses. The upper section crosses an open, largely pathless mountainside, where careful navigation is required, making a map and GPX route particularly important in poor visibility.
Close to the summit the terrain becomes more demanding, with loose scree and very steep, rocky ground that requires care and occasional scrambling. Underfoot conditions can be unstable, especially after wet weather.
The summit is topped by a trig point and rewards the effort with extensive views across north Mayo, including Lough Conn below. In clear conditions the panorama is vast, with local tradition suggesting views extending across several counties from this prominent peak.
You can continue your walking on the Bangor Trail which runs from Bangor Erris to the Wild Nephin National Park. Carrowmore Lake is also not far.
