Newport to Dinas Head Walk
3.9 miles (6.24 km)This walk takes you along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Newport to Dinas Head.
It's about a 4 mile walk along the undulating path with tremendous coastal views throughout.
Starting from the tidal estuary at Newport Parrog, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path heads west along undulating clifftops composed of Ordovician sandstones and mudstones. The path weaves past sheltered coves like Aber Rhigian and Aber Fforest, where the rock strata tilted nearly vertical millions of years ago are clearly visible....
Dinas Head, often called Dinas Island, is a prominent whale-backed promontory reaching a height of 142 metres at its northern peak, Pen-y-Fan. Geologically, it is not a true island but is separated from the mainland by a narrow wooded valley formed by glacial meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age. The ascent to the trig point is steep and rugged, rewarding walkers with panoramic views across Newport Sands to the north and the Preseli Hills inland.
The area is nationally important for its coastal birdlife and flora. In summer, the high vertical cliffs around Needle Rock serve as breeding grounds for razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, and shags, while ravens and rare choughs can be seen year-round. Windswept wildflowers like thrift, sea lavender, and bluebells line the eastern slopes in spring. The descent leads to the hamlet of Cwm-yr-Eglwys, where the belfry of St Brynach’s Church stands as a ruin after being largely destroyed by a historic storm in 1859.
