Lonely Shepherd Walk
4.2 miles (6.8 km)This circular walk climbs Mynydd Llangatwg and visits the legendary stone pinnacle of the Lonely Shepherd.
The route begins near the edge of the Clydach River Valley and follows upland paths onto the open moorland of Mynydd Llangatwg, a broad hill forming part of the Brecon Beacons’ eastern range. The ascent offers wide views over the surrounding valleys and the nearby Black Mountains....
At the summit plateau, the walk visits the Lonely Shepherd, a striking limestone pinnacle standing alone on the mountainside. Local legend says it was once a shepherd turned to stone, and it now serves as a distinctive landmark overlooking the Clydach Gorge.
The return leg descends through open moor and grassy tracks, passing areas shaped by quarrying and scattered sinkholes typical of the region’s limestone terrain. On clear days, there are far-reaching views across South Wales and towards the Bristol Channel.
At the northern end of the walk you can extend your outing by visiting the nearby Craig y Cilau.
