Ty Canol Woods Walk

2.1 miles (3.4 km)

This circular walk visits the Ty Canol National Nature Reserve near Newport.
You can start your walk from the parking area just to the south of the reserve.
The distinctive woodland has been shaped by centuries of natural growth and grazing. The route passes through areas of gnarled and twisted oak trees, with rocky outcrops and old stone walls giving the woodland a rugged, timeless feel.... An Iron Age fort within the reserve adds a clear historical element to the walk and reflects the long human presence in this landscape.
The reserve is especially notable for its lichens, which cover rocks, tree trunks and boulders throughout the woodland. These lichens are among the richest and most varied found anywhere in Britain and Ireland and are the main reason the site has been designated a National Nature Reserve. Their presence gives the woodland a distinctive appearance, particularly on older trees and exposed stone. In spring there are also lots of pretty bluebells to see.
Much of the walk follows paths through ancient oak woodland and wood pasture that has been grazed by cattle, sheep and ponies for many centuries. This long history of grazing has helped shape the open character of parts of the woodland, creating a varied environment that changes subtly as you move through the reserve. The result is a quiet and atmospheric walk focused on natural features and long-established woodland character.
To extend the walk head north east to visit one of the area's highlights at the ancient Pentre Ifan.
