One of the oldest settlements in the area, Ecclesfield has a rich history dating back to the medieval period and retains a number of notable historic buildings, traditional village streets and attractive green spaces.
The route centres on Ecclesfield Park, a pleasant public park with well-maintained surfaced paths, open lawns, colourful seasonal flower beds and an impressive avenue of mature trees. The park provides an easy walk suitable for all abilities and includes areas for recreation together with peaceful spots to sit and enjoy the surroundings.... Mature trees and shrubs attract a variety of birds throughout the year, making it a popular destination for local walkers.
The walk can be extended into the village centre, where you will find the historic Ecclesfield Conservation Area. Highlights include the picturesque village square, the remains of the medieval Ecclesfield Priory and the magnificent St Mary's Church. Dating largely from the 15th century, the Grade I listed church is one of the finest parish churches in South Yorkshire and is notable for its impressive Perpendicular architecture, historic monuments and commanding position within the village.
Ecclesfield also has a long industrial heritage, with nearby ironworking and cutlery industries contributing to the growth of Sheffield. Despite its proximity to the city, the village retains a distinct identity, with traditional stone buildings, historic inns and a welcoming village atmosphere.
To continue your walking, head north-east to Grenoside Woods. This extensive area of ancient woodland is crossed by a network of waymarked walking and cycling trails, with bluebells carpeting the woodland floor in spring and a rich variety of woodland birds, butterflies and fungi throughout the year.
