Halkyn Mountain Walk

6.5 miles (10.5 km)

This circular walk explores Halkyn Mountain near the village of Halkyn in the Clwydian Range.
The route crosses a broad area of open limestone plateau rather than a single peak, giving the walk a distinctive wide and airy feel. From the higher ground there are extensive views across the Dee Estuary towards the Wirral and Liverpool Bay, as well as inland views over the rolling countryside of Flintshire and towards the higher hills of the Clwydian Range.... The landscape reflects the area’s long history of lead mining, with old shafts, spoil mounds and stone features scattered across the mountain, adding interest to the walk. Despite its open character, Halkyn Mountain feels surprisingly remote in places, with rough grassland, low stone walls and big skies dominating much of the route.
At the southern end of the walk you will visit the Iron Age Hillfort of Moel Y Gaer.
