Tain Hill Forest and Pulpit Rock Walk
1.2 miles (1.9 km)This walk climbs to Tain Hill and Pulpit Rock in the Morangie Forest near the town of Tain in Easter Ross.
You can start the walk from the parking area on the eastern side of the hill. The route then follows forest tracks and paths through the peaceful Morangie Forest, gradually gaining height as it heads towards Tain Hill.... The woodland is home to a mix of conifer and broadleaf trees, creating a sheltered and scenic setting with the occasional open clearing offering fine views across the Dornoch Firth. As you approach the top of Tain Hill, the trees begin to thin, revealing wider panoramas of the surrounding countryside and the distant hills of Sutherland.
A short path leads to Pulpit Rock, a distinctive outcrop that provides one of the best viewpoints in the area. From here you can look back towards Tain, the Moray Firth, and the Cromarty Firth beyond. You'll also pass Quarry Hill where there are some interesting old quarry ruins and more excellent views.
The return route follows the same track or an alternative loop through quieter sections of the forest, where red squirrels and woodland birds are often seen among the trees.
