This section of the Kennet and Avon Canal provides an attractive waterside approach into one of England's most historic cities. Bathampton is a picturesque village on the eastern edge of Bath, known for its attractive stone cottages, village green and riverside setting close to the River Avon. The canal here forms part of the historic waterway linking Bristol and the Thames, which played an important role in transporting goods between the two cities during the Industrial Revolution.
As the walk approaches Bath, it passes Sydney Gardens, one of the city's oldest public pleasure gardens. Created in the eighteenth century, the gardens retain their historic character with mature trees, landscaped paths and views towards the canal. The route finishes near Halfpenny Bridge in Bath, close to the city centre and within easy reach of the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, the Royal Crescent and the Georgian streets that make Bath a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
