Bedford Embankment Waterfront Circular Walk
1.6 miles (2.6 km)This circular route through the heart of Bedford begins on the historic Town Bridge, offering a grand vantage point over the River Great Ouse before you head east along the Embankment. This wide, tree-lined promenade is the jewel of the town, featuring landscaped Victorian gardens and the ornate suspension bridge that connects to Mill Meadows.... As you stroll past the war memorial and the site of the old Swan Hotel, the path remains flat and paved, making it a favorite for local walkers and rowers alike.
Continue following the northern bank until you reach the picturesque Longholme Lake, where you will cross over to the southern side near the Longholme Bridge. This transition point often offers views of the local boating lake and the many swans that gather near the café. Near here you could also visit Priory Country Park.
Once on the southern bank, the trail turns back toward the west, leading you through the natural greenery of Mill Meadows. This stretch of the walk feels more secluded and wilder than the formal Embankment, passing by the Bedford Lock and the various bridges that span the river's split channels.
As you approach the final leg, the path brings you past the modern Bedford Rowing Club and the scenic St Mary’s Gardens. This southern riverside walk provides a unique perspective of the town's skyline and the historic Castle Mound across the water. The journey concludes as you reach the foot of the Town Bridge once more, completing a peaceful loop that showcases the very best of Bedford’s riverside heritage.
