Brancaster to Wells Next The Sea Walk
12.4 miles (20 km)The walk from Brancaster toward Wells-next-the-Sea begins by following the sea wall and embankments that separate the traditional flint-built villages from the sprawling salt marshes.
As you leave Brancaster behind, the path provides an elevated view over the tidal creeks where small boats bob in the mud at low tide.... This stretch is famously open and atmospheric, with the wind rustling through the vast beds of sea lavender and reeds that stretch toward the horizon.
Moving eastward, you reach the picturesque harbour of Burnham Overy Staithe, a busy hub for sailors and kayakers. From here, the trail heads out along a dramatic raised bank that cuts through the marshes toward the sea. To your left, the remote dunes of Scolt Head Island sit across the channel, serving as a sanctuary for sandwich terns and oystercatchers. The sound of calling wading birds and the whistling wind across the flats creates a sense of profound isolation, even as the path remains firm and easy to follow.
The final leg of the journey enters the Holkham National Nature Reserve, where the scenery changes as a dense belt of Corsican pines begins to border the path. This woodland provides a sheltered contrast to the exposed marshes, and the scent of pine needles fills the air. To the north, the trees occasionally break to reveal the massive scale of Holkham Beach, a seemingly endless expanse of pale sand. The walk concludes by following the sea wall straight into the heart of Wells-next-the-Sea, where the iconic line of colourful beach huts eventually gives way to the busy, crane-lined quay.
