Bury Ditches Walk
1.9 miles (3 km)This circular walk visits the Bury Ditches near Bishop's Castle in Shropshire. You can start the walk from the public car park located just to the east of the hill.... From here follow footpaths west through woodland up to Sunnyhill and the ancient site.
Bury Ditches occupies the summit of a prominent hill within the Shropshire Hills National Landscape and is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Britain. The earthworks consist of multiple banks and ditches enclosing the hilltop, creating a substantial defensive structure that would have provided commanding views over the surrounding countryside more than 2,000 years ago.
The climb passes through mixed woodland before emerging onto more open ground near the summit. From the hillfort there are extensive views across the rolling hills of south-west Shropshire, including parts of the Clun Valley and the uplands bordering Wales. The surrounding landscape is characterised by a patchwork of fields, woodland and heather-covered hills, giving the area a distinctly rural and unspoilt character.
The long distance Shropshire Way and the Jack Mytton Way pass through the site so you could extend your walk along these waymarked footpaths.
