Coltishall to Horstead Walk
0.8 miles (1.3 km)This short circular walk takes you along the River Bure from Coltishall to Horstead Mill. The walk starts in the centre of Coltishall near Broadgrace Church and then follows footpaths south along the river to the Horstead Mill Nature Reserve.
You can then cross the river here and follow footpaths along the opposite side to create a circular walk.
A key feature of the walk is the site of Horstead Mill, a large timber watermill that was destroyed by fire in 1963.... Today, the remaining mill pool, swirling sluices, and surrounding meadows form a designated local nature reserve managed to preserve the area's river heritage.
The slow-moving waters of the River Bure and the surrounding damp woodlands provide an ideal habitat for a variety of freshwater wildlife. Walkers frequently observe kingfishers darting low over the water, alongside resident mute swans, mallards, and little grebes. The undisturbed banks and reed beds support populations of water voles, while the mill pool itself is home to large fish species such as bream, roach, and pike. During the summer months, the river margins are highly active with insect life, including banded demoiselle damselflies and various species of dragonflies.
You can continue your walking in the area along the Bure Valley Path.
