Croghan Hill Walk

1.4 miles (2.2 km)

This circular loop walk climbs to Croghan Hill in County Offaly. The remains of an extinct volcano, the hill stands at a height of 234 metres (768 ft).
Rising abruptly from the surrounding flat landscape of the Bog of Allen, Croghan Hill is a distinctive landmark visible from much of the Midlands.... Its volcanic origins are reflected in the rocky outcrops near the summit, while lower slopes are used for pasture and are crossed by quiet country lanes and grassy tracks.
The summit area contains the remains of an early medieval ringfort, indicating the hill’s long strategic and cultural importance. From the top there are extensive views across Offaly and neighbouring counties, with the Slieve Bloom Mountains visible to the south on clear days. The isolated setting and wide panorama make this a short but striking upland walk in an otherwise low-lying region.
You can continue your walking in the area on the Kilbeggan Greenway or the Esker Bluebell Trail.
