Crosshaven Railway Walk
3.1 miles (5 km)The Crosshaven Railway Walk offers a peaceful journey through both natural beauty and local history, following the gentle curves of the Owenabue River as it flows toward Cork Harbour. The trail occupies the exact trackbed where the Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway once carried passengers to the seaside between 1904 and 1932.... Today, this 5km paved greenway serves as a scenic bridge between the bustling town of Carrigaline and the coastal village of Crosshaven, providing a level, multi-use path that is equally popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists.
The walk immediately immerses you in a riverside environment that is a haven for local wildlife. Birdwatchers can often spot various species of waders and waterfowl along the mudflats of the estuary, while the surrounding trees and grassy banks provide a lush backdrop. Along the way, the trail is dotted with restored railway features, such as signal lights and informational signage, which pay homage to its industrial past and the local residents who worked to preserve the route for public use.
One of the historical highlights of the route is Drake's Pool, a quiet cove located opposite the elegant Coolmore House. Legend tells that Sir Francis Drake and his fleet hid here in 1587 to escape the pursuing Spanish Armada, adding a touch of maritime intrigue to the walk. As you continue toward Crosshaven, the views open up to reveal the wider harbour and its many moored boats. The trail eventually leads you right into the heart of the village, finishing near the Royal Cork Yacht Club, where local cafes and bars offer a place to rest before the return journey.
You can continue your walking on the Crosshaven Cliff Walk.
