This expansive journey along the Kennet and Avon Canal Walk takes you westward from Devizes through some of the most spectacular engineering feats and scenic valleys in Southern England.
The walk begins with the descent of the magnificent Caen Hill Flight, a series of 29 locks that drop the canal 237 feet, offering an incredible perspective on the scale of industrial-age ambition. As the path levels out, it winds through the quiet Wiltshire countryside, where the towpath is frequently shaded by ancient trees and the water is bustling with colorful narrowboats and resident swans.
As you approach Trowbridge and move toward the historic town of Bradford-on-Avon, the landscape becomes more dramatic.... This section is home to the stunning Dundas Aqueduct and Avoncliff Aqueduct, where the canal is carried majestically over the River Avon and the railway line below. These limestone structures are masterpieces of masonry, offering unique vantage points over the lush, wooded valley. The final stretch from Claverton into the heart of Bath transitions from rural beauty to architectural grandeur. You will pass the unique Claverton Pumping Station, which still uses a massive waterwheel to lift water from the river into the canal, before the path begins its final approach into the World Heritage city.
