Ford Castle in Northumberland
Ford Castle. The castle is a Grade I listed building with origins dating back to approximately 1278. Originally a fortified manor house built by Odinel de Ford, it was later crenellated in 1338 by Sir William Heron to serve as a critical defence against Scottish raiders. Its history is deeply tied to the Battle of Flodden (1513), as King James IV of Scotland used the castle as his headquarters just days before his defeat. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a medieval fortress into a Tudor-style mansion and was eventually restored in a Gothic style by Lady Waterford in the mid-1800s.
