Horton Kirby River Walk

4.2 miles (6.8 km)

This walk follows a section of the Darent Valley Path from Horton Kirby to Lullingstone Country Park.
Starting by the river weir in Horton Kirby you follow the waymarked path south through Farningham to Eynsford where you will pass the historic castle. The route then finishes in Lullingstone Country Park where there is another ancient castle and a lovely lakeside trail.
The landscape along the Darent Valley Path is steeped in history and natural beauty, offering walkers a chance to see some of Kent's most significant archaeological sites.... As you leave Eynsford, the trail passes beneath the soaring red-brick arches of the Eynsford Viaduct, a striking Victorian landmark. Nearby, the Lullingstone Roman Villa provides a fascinating detour, featuring some of the best-preserved mosaic floors and wall paintings in Britain. This section of the North Downs landscape is especially popular during the summer months when the nearby lavender fields at Castle Farm are in full bloom, painting the valley in vibrant shades of purple.
Wildlife enthusiasts will find the riverside and woodland sections of the park teeming with activity. The clear waters of the River Darent are a prime habitat for kingfishers, grey herons, and egrets, while the ancient trees in Lullingstone Country Park provide a sanctuary for various bird species and rare butterflies. Look up to see birds of prey from the nearby Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation soaring over the chalk grassland. Whether you are exploring the ancient oak woodland or enjoying a quiet moment by the lakeside, this walk captures the quintessential charm of the Garden of England.
