Walk Report October 19th 2026 By James Whitaker:
We started from the car park in Hurley (postcode SL6 5NB for your sat navs) and made our way towards the River Thames to join the Thames Path.... Hurley is a lovely starting point for a riverside walk, with its historic village buildings and peaceful setting beside the water. Once we reached the river, the pace of the day slowed naturally. Boats were moving along the Thames, waterbirds were feeding close to the banks, and the tree-lined river made a pleasant change from walking along roads and through built-up areas.
The path took us through attractive riverside meadows, with open views across the water and stretches where mature trees came right down to the bank. I was delighted to spot a red kite circling above the fields, making use of the rising air currents. There was plenty to look at without having to climb any hills, and I enjoyed watching the boats as they passed, some moving slowly enough for their reflections to ripple across the water. The ground can become muddy after wet weather, but otherwise this is a relaxing way to enjoy the Thames Valley on foot.
As we continued towards Aston, the riverside scenery remained the main attraction. Aston is a small village and a useful place to pause along the way, particularly at The Flower Pot, a traditional pub popular with walkers following the Thames Path. Its position makes it a natural stop for a drink or lunch if you want to break up the journey. I liked having the option of a village pub without needing to make a long detour from the route.
Beyond Aston, the walk continued through the countryside towards Remenham. The Thames has a particularly attractive character along this stretch, with wooded banks, green meadows and glimpses of handsome riverside properties. The famous Henley rowing course lies further along the river, and it is interesting to think how different the atmosphere must be during Henley Royal Regatta, when the water is busy with racing crews and spectators. On an ordinary day, the route feels much more peaceful, with birdsong and the gentle movement of the river providing most of the soundtrack.
Approaching Henley-on-Thames, the riverside gradually becomes busier and the town's rowing heritage comes into focus. Henley Bridge is an impressive landmark and a fitting place to finish, with views along the river and plenty of cafés and pubs nearby for refreshments. After the quieter paths and meadows, I enjoyed the change of scene as we reached the town, where there is plenty to explore if you have time to stay a little longer.
This is a lovely point-to-point walk linking Hurley with Henley-on-Thames, combining peaceful riverside paths, open meadows and attractive villages. The route is relatively gentle compared with many countryside walks, although the distance means it is worth allowing a few hours and wearing suitable footwear if the paths are wet. I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a classic Thames-side walk, especially with the chance to stop at Aston and finish with a wander around Henley.
