Keenagh Loop Walk

7 miles (11.2 km)

This circular walk follows the Keenagh Loop in County Mayo.
The loop begins at Bellanderg Bridge west of Nephin and follows a mix of country lanes, green roadways, riverbank paths and open mountain terrain through a remote part of north Mayo. The route initially follows the old road towards Newport, starting on a surfaced lane before continuing onto a wide grass-covered track with expanding views across the surrounding landscape.
As the walk progresses, the trail follows the Boghadoon River, passing clear streams and small waterfalls as it enters the remote Glendorragha Valley.... This section is characterised by wild vegetation, quiet river scenery and a strong sense of isolation, with the valley enclosed by higher ground and changing mountain views.
The route then climbs towards the Knockaffertagh Pass, where more elevated ground provides wide views towards Glenhest and Newport on the outward section. On the return, the loop descends via farm track and minor road, opening out to panoramic views across North Mayo towards the Atlantic. The walk combines varied terrain, river scenery and expansive mountain viewpoints within a remote circular route. You can continue your walking in the area on the Nephin Mountain Walk or at the lovely Lough Conn.
