Landguard Point and Fort Walk
1.9 miles (3 km)This walk visits Landguard Point and Landguard Fort at the southern tip of Suffolk. The scenic area is located just south of Felixstowe and includes a wildlife rich nature reserve with views over Harwich Harbour.
The short, east walk takes you around a unique coastal environment where military history meets a rare shingle habitat.... As you explore the area around the 18th-century Landguard Fort, you are standing on the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England. The fort itself is a Grade I listed monument, providing a fascinating glimpse into the UK's defensive past. The walk along the viewpoint allows you to witness the dramatic contrast of giant container ships entering the Port of Felixstowe against the backdrop of the tranquil Harwich Harbour and the Essex coastline.
Nature enthusiasts will find the Landguard Nature Reserve to be a premier destination for spotting coastal flora and fauna. This 33-hectare site is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to over 400 species of plants, including the rare Sea Pea and Yellow Horned-poppy. The reserve is a vital pitstop for migratory birds; during the spring and autumn, you may see wheatears, goldcrests, and various warblers resting in the scrub. The saltmarsh and shingle banks also provide a sanctuary for common lizards and a diverse array of specialized insects, making it an essential visit for anyone interested in the natural heritage of the Suffolk Coast.
You can continue your walking in the area by picking up the Suffolk Coast Path or by visiting Trimley Marshes.
