Lenham Cross Walk
1.6 miles (2.5 km)This circular walk takes you up to the Lenham Cross War Memorial above the village of Lenham in the Maidstone district of Kent.
Starting from the village you head north to meet up with the North Downs Way and the Pilgrims Way long distance trails. Follow the waymarked paths east and you will soon come to the cross.... The striking 200-foot-high (61m) chalk hill figure is carved into the south-facing scarp of the North Downs in Kent. Designed by local school headmaster Mr C.H. Groom and hand-cut by village volunteers, it was unveiled in September 1922 as a permanent memorial to the 42 men of the parish who died in the First World War. During the Second World War, the cross was deliberately filled in and covered with earth to prevent it from serving as a navigational landmark for the German Luftwaffe, eventually being uncovered and restored in 1945.
From the elevated spot on the North Downs there are some excellent views over the surrounding countryside to enjoy. On clear days you can even see as far as the Dungeness coast.
