Lichfield to Chasewater Greenway Railway Walk

5.3 miles (8.5 km)

This walk or cycle follows the follows the trackbed of a disused railway line from Lichfield to Chasewater Country Park in Staffordshire.
Starting your journey at the Lichfield end, you begin near the historic Sandfields Pumping Station on Chesterfield Road. The path immediately offers a sense of escape as you step onto the level, stone-surfaced trackway that once carried the South Staffordshire Railway.... Heading southwest, the route is flanked by dense corridors of trees and greenery, creating a peaceful "green lung" that makes you feel miles away from the city despite being so close to home.
As you continue the gentle climb toward Chasewater, the scenery opens up to reveal sweeping views of the Staffordshire countryside. One of the walk's most modern highlights occurs midway, where the trail carries you across a substantial bridge over the M6 Toll, offering a bird's-eye view of the motorway traffic below.
The final section runs along the Wyrley and Essington Canal Chasewater to take you into the country park from Newtown Bridge. It's a lovely waterside section ending at the picturesque lake in the park.

Fossway Crossing, Lichfield. The Greenway follows the historic 1849 South Staffordshire Railway line, which once connected Lichfield to the Black Country as a vital conduit for Industrial Revolution freight and worker transport. Following the 1965 passenger service closure due to the Beeching cuts, the line served local industry until 2001, when it closed to make way for the modern trail.
