Lynmouth to Valley Of The Rocks Walk
4.3 miles (7 km)Starting along the banks of the East Lyn River, the walk begins where the fresh water meets the sea at the edge of the village. You move through the narrow streets of Lynmouth, passing timbered buildings and small shops that sit nestled between the steep, wooded hills and the harbor wall.... As you transition from the village toward the higher ground, the path begins to climb, moving away from the sound of the rushing river and toward the expansive views of the Bristol Channel.
The route leads you along the rugged coastline on a path carved directly into the cliffside. This stretch offers a dramatic contrast between the vast open sea on one side and the towering, jagged stone faces on the other. The terrain here is narrow but steady, winding around the contours of the hill while providing a clear sightline of the massive grey boulders and scree slopes ahead. It is common to see the local feral goats navigating the near-vertical rock faces with ease, adding to the wild feel of the landscape.
As you enter the Valley of the Rocks itself, the scenery shifts into a prehistoric-looking basin. Giant, weather-beaten rock towers rise up like ancient ruins, framing a grassy floor where a local cricket pitch sits in a surprisingly tranquil setting. The atmosphere is quiet and ancient, dominated by the scale of the natural stone formations that tower over the path. Walking through this section feels like stepping into a hidden world, where the harsh coastal elements have sculpted the land into deep ridges and sharp peaks that overlook the crashing waves far below.
