Princetown Railway Walk

12.3 miles (19.8 km)

This walk or cycle takes you along the route of the old railway line from Princetown to Burrator Reservoir on Dartmoor.
Heading south-west from Princetown, you follow the sweeping, easy gradients of the former Princetown Railway, which originally served the local granite quarries. As you skirt the edges of Walkhampton Common, the landscape opens up into vast, undulating moorland where the trackbed provides a remarkably level path through the rugged terrain.... To the east, the dramatic granite stacks of Sharpitor rise prominently against the skyline, offering a landmark that stays with you as you navigate the gentle curves of the old line. The route feels remote and expansive until you begin your descent toward the treeline, where the open moor eventually gives way to the sheltered, wooded surroundings of Burrator Reservoir.
