Quoile River Walk

4.8 miles (7.7 km)

This easy waterside walk takes you along the Quoile River in Downpatrick.
Starting from the free car park at Quoile Steamboat Quay, you'll begin a scenic, level walk along the Quoile Pondage Nature Reserve. This initial stretch follows an off-road path where you can see historical features like the 19th-century Steamboat Quay, which was once used for steam packet operations, and the ruins of Quoile Castle, a 16th-century tower house....
As you head south, the route takes you past the Quoile Countryside Centre, a seasonally open visitor centre with a nature garden and bird hides that offer views of mute swans and other wildfowl. Continuing south, you will reach the old Quoile Bridge, where you must cross the road with care to join the next section of the path.
The final leg of your walk follows the picturesque Jane's Shore pathway, which has recently been upgraded to provide a smooth, accessible gravel and paved surface for about 1.2 km. This trail winds along the riverbank through a freshwater wetland until you finish at the A7 Belfast Road, near the prominent St. Patrick sculpture.
You can continue your exercise around Strangford Lough and at the historic Castle Ward.
