Saul Junction Canal Walk
0.9 miles (1.4 km)This circular walk visits Saul Junction and Saul Marina near Frampton on Severn in Gloucestershire. From this spot you can enjoy easy walks along the Stroudwater Canal and the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
Saul Junction is one of the most important locations on the county's inland waterway network and is a popular destination for walkers, cyclists and boaters.... The beautifully restored canal basin, historic lock gates, swing bridges and traditional lock keeper's buildings reflect the area's rich canal heritage, while the busy junction is often filled with colourful narrowboats travelling between the Severn Estuary, the Cotswolds and the Midlands canal network.
The surrounding landscape is flat and open, with extensive views across the Severn Vale towards the Cotswold Hills and the Forest of Dean. The canals provide valuable habitats for kingfishers, herons, swans, ducks, dragonflies and damselflies, while the hedgerows and meadows support a variety of farmland birds throughout the year.
The walk also passes Saul Marina, one of the largest inland marinas in the South West. The marina offers extensive moorings and facilities for visiting boats, while the nearby canal-side café and picnic areas provide a pleasant place to relax and watch boats navigating the junction and surrounding locks.
