Shanklin to Godshill Walk
4.8 miles (7.7 km)This point to point walk takes you from coastal Shanklin to the inland village of Godshill. The route uses parts of the Worsley Trail and the Stenbury Trail to take you west to Wroxall and then across Appuldurcombe House Park before finishing at Godshill.... The route runs for just under 5 miles along the waymarked trails.
The trail transitions from the sandstone coastal landscape of Shanklin into the rolling chalk downs and rural valleys of the island's interior. Walking west, the route follows well-defined unpaved paths, bridleways, and sections of quiet country lanes. A key feature of the walk is the passage through Appuldurcombe House Park, an 18th-century landscape designed by Capability Brown that surrounds the grand ruins of an historic Baroque mansion. The final leg brings walkers into Godshill, a picturesque village known for its traditional thatched cottages and medieval church.
The mix of ancient woodland, parkland meadows, and open downland provides excellent habitats for local wildlife. The mature trees and undisturbed areas around the Appuldurcombe estate are home to a steady population of native red squirrels, which can be seen foraging on the woodland floor. The open pastures and chalk downlands are hunting grounds for birds of prey, including buzzards and kestrels, whilst the hedgerows along the Worsley Trail support a variety of songbirds such as yellowhammers and whitethroats.
